The problem
Road freight is the backbone of European trade, and it is messy. A shipper may work with hundreds of hauliers, tender loads country by country and learn about delays only when a customer calls. At the factory gate, trucks often arrive at the same time and wait for hours with engines idling, while drivers lose time they could spend driving. Then, at the end of the year, sustainability teams have to estimate Scope 3 transport emissions from incomplete data.
All of this costs money and fuel. A truck stuck at a dock, running empty or taking the wrong load is wasted capacity. Better coordination will not replace electric trucks, but it reduces the number of kilometres and hours that any truck needs to do the same work.
The product
The Transporeon Transportation Management Platform is a cloud network of modular applications that serve shippers, retailers, carriers, brokers and goods recipients (Transporeon). Its main tools cover:
- freight sourcing for spot, seasonal and long-term contracts;
- transport assignment, matching loads with carriers;
- Time Slot Management for docks, warehouses and yards;
- Visibility Hub for real-time tracking and predictive arrival times;
- freight audit and payment;
- Carbon Visibility, which calculates greenhouse gas emissions for each transport.
When Trimble agreed to buy it in December 2022, Transporeon’s platform integrated with more than 3,000 ERP and transport management systems and handled more than 25 million transports a year, with recurring revenue above 90% of the total (Trimble).
How it works
- Tender: a shipper publishes loads or contracts on the platform, and connected carriers bid.
- Assign: the platform awards each load to a carrier using price, quality and capacity data.
- Book a slot: the carrier books a loading or unloading time at the warehouse dock, so arrivals are spread through the day.
- Track: telematics and app data feed the Visibility Hub, which predicts arrival times and flags exceptions.
- Settle: freight invoices are checked automatically against agreed rates and paid.
- Report: Carbon Visibility calculates well-to-wheel emissions for each transport from real data, ready for Scope 3 reporting.

Impact and numbers
- Network: at completion of the Trimble deal, the platform connected more than 1,400 shippers and retailers and more than 150,000 carriers. Every day they executed more than 110,000 transports and booked more than 100,000 dock appointments, with about EUR 55 billion of freight processed in a year (Trimble). Transporeon now cites 1,500+ shippers and 210,000+ carriers.
- Dock waiting: ArcelorMittal Hamburg, which has used the platform since 2007, combined Time Slot Management with the Peripass yard system and reports truck waiting times cut by up to 40% and lead time from registration to exit below 90 minutes (Transporeon).
- Visibility: Nestlé centralised transport management in Europe and rolled out Visibility Hub, using predictive arrival times and exception dashboards to cut costs, reduce CO2 and react during disruptions such as COVID-19 (Transporeon).
- Emissions data: Carbon Visibility measures Scope 3 emissions well-to-wheel, bottom-up and transport by transport, in line with the GLEC framework. Transporeon says it was the first provider of primary data for CO2 emissions in transport, and that customers can upload third-party data to see all transports in one place (Transporeon).
- Automation: Trimble Arc Agent, a subscription AI agent, reads emails, PDFs and spreadsheets and turns them into structured data in transport systems. Trimble says 70% of transport and logistics organisations in a survey named manual, repetitive tasks as their leading pain point (Transporeon).
Honest caveats. Transporeon’s environmental benefit is indirect: it makes trucking more efficient, but it can equally make diesel freight cheaper and easier to buy. The company does not publish a total figure for emissions avoided across its network, and the customer results are self-reported case studies, with “up to 40%” describing the best result rather than the average. Network figures have changed between releases (145,000, 150,000 and now 210,000 carriers), partly because of growth and partly because of different definitions. Emissions calculations are only as good as the data behind them, and many small carriers still do not share telematics data. Since 2023 Transporeon has been part of Trimble, a US group, so its strategy is now set within Trimble’s transport division. The AI agent is new, and its benefits are not yet independently measured.
What’s next
Trimble is adding AI across the platform, from natural-language freight search to Arc Agent, which connects to transport systems and to email tools like Gmail and Outlook with human approval controls. Carbon Visibility will need to align with ISO 14083 and new EU rules as transport emissions reporting becomes harmonised.
Why it matters for Europe / green buyers
On 1 June 2026, the EU’s CountEmissionsEU rules, Regulation (EU) 2026/1030, entered into force. They set a common method, aligned with EN ISO 14083:2023, for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from freight and passenger transport, so that companies that disclose transport emissions publish consistent and verifiable figures, with full application expected by the end of 2030 (European Commission). For European shippers, a platform that already calculates emissions for each transport from primary data is a practical way to prepare and to choose lower-carbon carriers in tenders.
India launched its National Logistics Policy in September 2022, with the Prime Minister saying logistics costs must fall from about 13% of GDP to a single-digit figure as soon as possible (PIB). Digital freight tendering, dock scheduling and visibility are exactly the tools that cut such costs, and the Transporeon model shows how a shared network can serve both large shippers and small carriers.
